A "stick dulcimer", as I call it, is a fully playable zither. You can see a demo here:
With your purchase, you can customize it however you want. Before you order, choose the following (Which can affect the price):
-wood type (oak or mahogany)
-number of strings, along with tuning
-finish: I can leave it unfinished, or use danish wax over everything (which slightly darkens the color) and if you order it, also use Howard's feed-n-wax everywhere except the fretboard. These things help protect the wood.
Upon checkout, you can choose the following options (which do not affect the price):
-VSL (the length from the nut to the bridge)
-frets (diatonic, some extra frets, or fully chromatic)
-tuning peg color (white or black)
-fret marker locations
Note about wood type: the choice of wood type is simply cosmetic and does not affect the quality or sound. I used offer oak and walnut, but walnut is increasingly difficult to find, so I have replaced it with mahogany, which has a similar coloring.
Before I purchased my walnut stick dulcimer, I had several questions about tuning and fret placement. GO Dulcimer was incredibly patient, offering expert advice to help ensure the instrument was perfect for learning mountain dulcimer tabs. Thank you!
Being unsure of what a stick dulcimer was comprised of, how to order, options available, etc. I contacted Grant by email to ask some questions. He responded quickly (within the same day) and answered all my questions completely. I placed an order after that conversation and he contacted me back to confirm that he understood all that I wanted. So, great experience in communicating and confirming my order. I haven't received my order yet (30 days post order) but I understand he is a college student and my order conflicted with his college schedule, which was not a problem for me. So, I cannot comment on the quality of his work yet. Further review comments to follow. As to any conflicts between his college schedule and his order delivery schedule, please keep this in mind when ordering if you want fast response. I suggest you contact him and discuss your timing needs and how that might conflict with his schedule and plan accordingly.
Although i haven’t received my customized Stick Dulcimer yet, Mr. Olson listened to incorporate as many of my ideas as were feasible. To have the option to customize my instrument, is just over the top! I can’t wait for my instrument to arrive so I can start playing it. What a great concept of a ‘traveling dulcimer !’ 😊
Having received my dulcimer stick I was impressed with the craftsmanship but even more impressed with the sound and tone this stick produced. I have added a cigar box with Velcro to the stick and it sounds better than my McSappden. I love it so much I am ordering a five string DADAD setup. If you are even thinking about ordering don’t hesitate order now !
